How to Attract a Volunteer
Your listing will be one of many competing for our volunteers’ attention. Skilled professionals are in great demand. To stand out from other requests, your role will have to sound appealing. Try and view the information you provide from the perspective of a volunteer.
Your organisation:
- Many volunteers are motivated by an organisation’s mission and objectives so ensure that you communicate your purpose and activities well.
The role:
- The job title and 20-word summary job description are vital – these will be the very first thing prospective volunteers will see so choose your words carefully.
- Give a clear, accurate and attractive description of the position you want to fill. Say how the role will fit within the structure of the organisation and the level of responsibility it will cover.
- Finance and fundraising volunteers are in particularly high demand. Explain clearly the level of work, tasks involved and the skills required. (e.g. Finance – daily book-keeping or strategic management; fundraising – research, presentations, application writing etc).
Time commitment and environment:
- Volunteers are unlikely to give more than two days per week. If necessary, break the role down into two or more positions.
- Many volunteers are interested in short term projects or one-off projects.
- Some volunteers prefer to work at home, some prefer to work with others. Indicate how much of the task can be done at home, and who, if anyone, the volunteer will be working alongside.
- If the role involves regular meetings, try and specify when and where these meetings take place.
Benefits to the volunteer:
- What might the volunteer gain from the position? Do you provide an induction, training or any other support? Highlight any useful or interesting experiences that the role might provide.

What happens next
Once we’ve received your completed registration form, Reach:
- checks the form and contacts you if anything is
unclear
- sends you an acknowledgement
- performs a search for suitable volunteers to fill your post
- forwards details about your role to likely volunteers
- sends you the contact details and background information for any volunteer who expresses interest in the position.
From this point it’s up to you and the volunteer to take the recruitment process forward in your own way. You are under no obligation to accept any candidate. It is important however that you contact the volunteer promptly and keep them informed as to progress.
Please ensure Reach is kept regularly updated regarding progress in filling your vacancy; otherwise volunteers may be sent details of opportunities that have already been filled.
Reach volunteers can view your posting on our interactive database of volunteering opportunities. Those interested can contact Reach and ask us to send you their contact details.
Once you’ve registered a position with Reach, we continue to field volunteer enquiries and send you contact details until you find the right person for the role. There is no time limit on Reach’s service and no maximum number of referrals. If the role has not been filled at the end of six months we will contact you to discuss the way forward.
